One of the few Country bands that have the distinction of playing their own instruments on all their albums, Emerson Drive returned to form in 2006 with their third album Countrified.

Countrified seems like an apt title for a band who has only ever just wanted to perform country. Their previous albums Emerson Drive and What If were deemed too pop, making the Canadian band more determined than ever to produce an album of stellar country songs.

Teaming up with the newly formed Midas Records Nashville, the band produced an album with still the same strong songwriting, and family-value cores, but added richer country elements to each song.

For fans, who have previously loved the style of music Emerson Drive have produced, don’t despair. There are still rock/pop elements to the album, countrified with rich fiddle passages, and twangy ballads.

One of the most refreshing qualities about Emerson Drive is that they perform songs such as “Sweet Natural Girl” and “Lucky Man”, which are honest lyrics about a man in love. It’s a theme that works well for the band with straight from the heart lyrics, and an endearing tribute to love.

The band show their versatile side of things with ‘You Still Own Me’, and ‘Painted Too Much Of This Town’, which gives us the ‘lost’ side of love. Tapping into every emotion, this is an album that produces not just some rollicking toe-tappers such as “Painted Too Much Of This Town” and their cover of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” but some poignant tracks such as “Moments”, which gave the band their first #1 American single.

One of the best country albums of 2006, Countried shows that Emerson Drive aren’t a band going anywhere soon. For fans of country, if you haven’t heard Emerson Drive before now, it’s about time you do.

I give it HHHH
