In 2006 Elton John turned 60 years old. He celebrated with a superb performance at Madison Square Garden, and then topped it off with the release of Rocketman:the number ones; which saw many of his greatest songs digitally remastered.
Too many artists’ release greatest hit packages that tend to be redundant of others they, or
their record labels, have already released and most fail to deliver. However, this time, Elton John has really nailed it. In some form or another, each of his songs have been a #1 hit somewhere in the world, and the selection of songs, were perfectly chosen.
For those who have not heard some of their masterpieces before, this is a must have. I must admit, listening to 'Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me', I was half expecting to hear George Michael give his input, as it’s the only version of the song that I actually have.
I never fail tire of hearing 'Tiny Dancer', 'Candle In The Wind', 'Crocodile Rock', 'Daniel', or 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', and it really is Elton at his best.
While the rocketman has aged, his voice has stayed true, and this is none more obvious with the new single, Tinderbox, which appears on this album.
Of course like many albums, there are different versions for different countries, and sadly we miss out on his version of 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds', which is worth listening to on the US version of this album.
I give this 3/5
